New Building Consents for all buildings by year for Canterbury

Building Round Up – we are seeing as the graphs below shows continued improvement in the numbers of Building Consents being issued around the Country. In Canterbury it does appear to have peaked and we can probably see a time coming where things will slow down again. The level of maintenance and other work done  as a result of the earthquakes will mean less R&M for a wee while. The biggie for many of us is simply the slow start to getting any high end housing and commercial work underway. This is now happening and we are busy. In Auckland the demand is going to drive us forward for sometime. The level of building is still not back to where it was 10 + years ago. See the graph we saw in the NZ Herald a few weeks ago.

New Building Consents for all buildings by year for Auckland

The graph clearly shows that overall we are still well short of the 2004 peak in Building Activity and in particular Auckland is lagging. The opposite is true where Christchurch because of earthquake related activity has seen a peak and can now be expected to drop away. Interestingly enough as a supplier to non LCH ( low cost homes) we are only just now 4+ years later seeing some improved trading. So whilst activity in Canterbury has most likely peaked in totality the parts for our types of products is only kicking into life.

Hot Water Beach Design and Build, a great job.

A lot of detailed work all done extremely well by Chris and his team at Hot Water Beach Design & Build

Accoya is proving popular with houses where they are being painted and or stained a dark colour. I guess the fact that Accoya is so stable is a big reason. If you are considering using a dark colour then there is no better choice. We have seen some some nice jobs in decking lately and one of the jobs we did 12 months ago is still looking pretty darn nice. Resene Woodsman on Accoya check it out below.

Some great houses being built, one of these is the one illustrated below. Chris and his team at Hot Water Beach Design and Build have done a fabulous job of this Oak and Cedar beach house..

Supply chains are groaning at demand for key items. The growth in demand after the GFC has been slow and has seen a large number of sawmills here in NZ and elsewhere close and go broke. This is leading to shortages in supply as the remaining suppliers struggle to cope.

Data we see coming through suggest continuing demand for building materials and weather boards as an example are flying out the door. So prospects for Building Supply merchants should be okay.
