The Americans (Hardwoods) are coming

A typical hardwood forest looks a bit different to the
Radiata plantations we are used to seeing
We are seeing more and more demand for American White Ash and White Oak, in particular.

Their light colour, well accepted and known names, when combined with great pricing are winning more and more sales. Both of these species are recognized around the World and today with the fact that they are cheaper than most any other hardwood makes for bargains. Hardwood Flooring is popular and White Oak is the most popular floor, when the price is considered it is cheaper now than Kwila, Tasmanian Oak, Jarrah, and almost any other species, EXCEPT White Ash. White Ash is the best of the bargains. Currently we are seeing Hard Maple Flooring at unbelievable bargain prices as well. In fact it’s comparable with White Oak.

The U.S. hardwood sawmilling and processing industry is the largest in the world and depends upon the hardwood forests of the United States for the widest range of temperate hardwood species in the world. They produce consistent grades and provide for constant and reliable shipments.

American hardwood species represent over 40 percent of the trees in the U.S. and comprise one of the most sustainably managed forest resources in the world. Some FSC and PEFC product is available , BUT the resource is by nature held in small holdings and certification costs are usually too high for the small stakeholders to bear. The remainder of timber is generally deemed to be sustainable because the forest areas are increasing over time.

We have lots of American Hardwood timber
in stock.

Any of the available species listed can be used for interior purposes, such as furniture, moulding and millwork, cabinetry and much more. A number of species can be used for flooring, as well. For a taste of both the range of commercial species available and the wide variety of uses have a look at Timspec stock White Ash, Red Oak, White Oak, Hard Maple, Cherry, and Black Walnut. More information is available about stocks in our timber stocks section of this newsletter, and our web site provides technical and general properties for all these species.

We expect the Christchurch re-build to gather pace. Overall the issue we face is that building is at a 46 year low. General confidence and spending is low, meaning people are being careful about spending. We have two new staff and 3 babies arriving to start us on our way for the Year.
