NZ Exotic Species

NZ Exotics – we are seeing an unprecedented change in the supply of Radiata Pine where the costs for Clear grades are skyrocketing yet the industrial and structural grades are in the doldrums. Our NZ grown Eucalypts are clearly seeing some good exposure as we are flat out selling and struggling to keep up. The hard part is the keeping up with getting the stock and then managing the difficult drying process.

Radiata – very strong sales for Radiata Pine Clears for weather boards and other end uses has seen our stocks dwindle and we are struggling like crazy to keep abreast. Recent events have seen us add a new supply mill to supplement our supply and we are now more confident we can support the higher levels of demand. Costs are rising due to very strong demand in USA and Europe and with the lower dollar much higher returns being gained from those markets. Only fair as we have not seen prices rise here for 10 years or more. all our Radiata Prices will rise from 1st October and we expect that there could be another increase after Xmas.

Saligna – very strong demand for Saligna has led to us chasing more stock to replenish our dwindling stocks. Saligna is a great NZ sourced option for use but we strongly recommend keeping it coated to extend its life and reduce in service swelling and shrinkage.

Pilularis – NZ grown stocks are not as plentiful as they were and although we are keeping up with demand it is frustrating that supply is so up and down. Lead times from getting it sawn to being able to sell it vary from 6 -14 months. So it is not easy to turn on a supply overnight.

Supply chains are groaning at demand for key items. The growth in demand after the GFC has been slow and has seen a large number of sawmills here in NZ and elsewhere close and go broke. This is leading to shortages in supply as the remaining suppliers struggle to cope.

Data we see coming through suggest continuing demand for building materials and weather boards as an example are flying out the door. So prospects for Building Supply merchants should be okay.

Lots happening with our supply chains and costs relating to each have their own story.
2015 has so far seen record sales levels but increasing pressure on margins as we see desperate sellers. Contradictory on so many levels but a fact. We ended the financial year 31st March with 2 record months in a row.
