North American Softwoods

North American Softwoods - Western Red Cedar is our main softwood species from North America. Supplies remain tight and prices very firm. These prices are at record levels, in general and in particular wider widths where we are seeing large premiums especially for quarter sawn.  The falling Kiwi dollar exacerbates the situation and is seeing prices in the market here in NZ rise. Alaskan Yellow Cedar is a smaller volume species and has in recent years been sold a discount to Western Red Cedar for joinery. The lack of a 45mm board means it is not markedly different in cost to Western Red Cedar when used for cladding. Historically this is not the case, but the key market for Yellow Cedar used to be Japan and this market has not been as active in recent years. So Yellow Cedar selling prices remain at historic lows.  We are stocking some beautiful Yellow Cedar in 100-250x50 with the odd bit of 300x50.

Western Red Cedar - sales remain strong although the supply chain has been stretched as we are in the Northern Summer right now we are seeing some more stock coming through the mills. Having said that we are not seeing a lot of offers suggesting that supply and demand are still close to being in balance. We have stocks of 75 through 300x45, as well as 75 through 300x50, and 150-300x63, as well as 150 and 200x75.

Yellow Cedar - good stocks of KD and more stock coming. Supplies are steady and pricing of Yellow Cedar are attractive compared to Western Red Cedar. The nature is such that for cladding Yellow is much the same as Western Red (mainly because the Yellow Cedar is not cut as 45mm but rather as 50mm).
